YOUâRE THE BOSS
Stella Sandberg
Jackie âJackâ McGregg was expected in the bossâs office at Landon Architects. This wasnât new to herâsheâd often had a brief but friendly chitchat with Mr. Landon in his office. What was new this time was that old Mr. Landon had retired and someone else would be waiting for her behind his desk. Theyâd understood each other, she and Mr. Landon. Heâd trusted her and not bothered her about how she should do her job. Before he left heâd said to her: âIf it was up to me, I could think of no one better suited to sail this ship than trusty old Jack. But itâs notâthe board members have had their say. You just keep on doing your job the way youâve always done it, and try not to bully your new boss too much, okay?â
God, she missed the old man! Things were going to be different now, very differentâ¦. The new head of the company, Miss Landon, was some damn brat straight out of business school, with a head full of those crazy ideas they teach you in that kind of place and no real-life experience to rid her of them. She was a relative of Mr. Landonâs, of courseânot daughter, heâd never married, was it niece?âand part owner in the Landon business empire. Clearly money and influence, not merit, had put her in this important position, and Jackie shuddered to think of the consequences for the company.
Purposely she didnât knock before entering the office. She was expected, after all, and she wanted to show the brat what kind of status old Jackie had in the firm. She noticed that the secretary, who was wisely replaced too and hence not loyal to the old boss, nervously threw herself at the intercom and announced Jackieâs presence. Apparently the new boss had made herself feared already, at least by her secretaryâ¦.
The office looked just the same: the same view over central London through the panorama window, the same huge and slightly old-fashioned mahogany deskâ¦. The view behind the desk was distinctly different from the elderly gentleman in a well-cut and well-pressed suit, though. Miss Landon looked like a cartoon of a â50s pinup. Really. She was one of those ridiculously curvaceous women with a waist you could reach around with your hands and a bosom spilling out of her tasteful, charcoal grey suit. Jackie couldnât see the bum she was sitting on, but she was sure it practically spilled out of her skirt, too. Her hair was a fiery red that might even be her true color, judging from her pale, freckled skin. It was arranged in one of those preposterous coiffures that probably emptied an entire spray can to fix into place. Her eyes were made up like she was on the runway rather than in an office, and her pursed lips were a bold fuchsia that shouldnât go with her hair but somehow did just because she carried it with such je ne sais quoi.
Despite herself, Jackie was taken aback by the new bossâs glamor.
